TopSportsLab specialise in the field of performance enhancement and injury prevention within professional team sports. Our proprietary software and systems are based on the results of years of scientific research and enable us to give game changing training and squad selection advice.
Our founders are Professor Werner Helsen (Catholic University of Leuven and UEFA) and physical coach, Jan Van Winckel of Olympique de Marseille (also formerly Club Brugge and Al Ahli). They set up TopSportsLab as a spin-off from the Catholic University of Leuven (B) and we continue to collaborate with their faculty of Sports and Rehabilitation Sciences.
The main goal for TopSportsLab is to take the results of the latest scientific research and theoretical knowledge and provide a platform where the benefits can be appreciated in the real world.
Injuries are prevented by an early alarm system indicating “when” and “where” an athlete might get injured. The physical performance is optimised by continually balancing the actual “training load” of the athlete with his individual "load tolerance”.
Besides athlete related optimisation, TopSportsLab leverages knowledge and enhances cross-discipline communication between staff. To that end, TopSportsLab has developed one all-encompassing athlete management system for all technical and medical staff.
We have assisted a number of leading professional sports clubs and federations around the world (see case studies) and continue to grow at an exciting pace.
After initial baseline screening we generate a physical ability and injury risk profile of every individual athlete in a team. We then implement continuous monitoring of the athletes by continuously tracking all relevant ‘Key Performance Indicators’. Both the musculoskeletal and the cardiovascular workloads are monitored to provide ‘overload indicators,’ which are individualised to the athlete. This means medical and technical staff can push to the limits of their potential while greatly minimising the chance of injury.
The TopSportsLab dashboard uses proprietary scientific algorithms to generate an overview of the fitness and fatigue levels of athletes, readily available at any time any place. Subsequently, advice can be offered to monitor and modify individual training programs. Using a web-based application, this information can be consulted and communicated in a user-friendly fashion to all members of technical, medical and sports science staff in a club.
